Dentofacial Orthopedics in Rockford, IL

Unlike orthodontics, dentofacial orthopedics isn’t a phrase you hear often. Dentofacial orthopedics is the management of facial growth and development. Because facial growth and development usually occur in between the ages of 7 and 8, children are the best candidates for dentofacial orthopedic therapy.

Dentofacial orthopedics is a two-phase process. Phase one happens if your child has started orthodontic treatment before their adult teeth have come in. The therapy is used to correct any issues with your child’s jaw growth or correcting the bone if it isn’t aligning properly.  These issues may lead to difficulty eating, speaking, and even chronic jaw pain if not treated. Once Phase One is complete, Phase Two will begin; this usually involves the placement of braces for continued treatment. While children are the most common candidates for this type of treatment, adults may require it as well. The difference between the treatments of an adult versus a child is that the adult’s jaw bone has hardened making it more difficult to adjust.
